Prayer on the Hill 2018

Prayer on the Hill is an annual gathering organised by a branch of Churches Together in Weston-super-Mare called 'LOVE WESTON'.

Our aim is to encourage each of us to pray and show practical care for the communities around where we live, work, relax or study. We believe that prayer changes things and that we can all be agents for positive change in our town.

It takes place on Saturday 7th July 2018 and will include worship led by Salv Lomanto, prayers, songs and worship from Rob Parker (Wings Prayer House - Bridlington), a short talk from Rev Keith Powell and prayers of blessing over the town and district.

The 90 minute gathering will be led by Gary Hoare, the President of Churches Together in Weston and District as well as local church leaders, worship leaders and young people, who will lead us in a time of prayer.

Special guests include Rob Parker from Wings Prayer House and Rev Keith Powell, the Diocesan Renewal Advisor.

Rob Parker is a gifted preacher with a heart for prayer who runs Wings Prayer House, based in Bridlington. He is also an inspirational songwriter and musician. He recently released 'Awakening the Coastlands' a moving album that reflects the growing hope for revival across our nation. See here

Rev Keith Powell recently retired from parish ministry, but continues his work in the Diocese of Bath and Wells where he is advisor to the Bishop on Renewal. His work takes him abroad regularly on missions and ministry trips.

We will illuminate a beacon as a visual representation of our prayers and our wish to see good things, prosperity and success emanating from our streets and neighbourhoods.

We invite Christians once again from all the local churches to join us for this act of unity. (John 17:23)

We meet at the tower on Uphill Hill at 7.30pm or in St Nicholas Church, Uphill if it rains. There will be music and worship from 7pm. We will be providing free 4x4 transport from the boatyard entrance up the hill, from 6.45pm for those who are unable to walk - thanks to Wessex 4x4.

Prayer-Walks

As a preparation for Prayer on the Hill, we are encouraging local people to prayer-walk their streets, local landmarks, the beach, places that need prayer - anywhere they are led to go during the week leading up to the event!   We have made available supplies of the Neighbourhood Prayer Net Prayer Guides entitled 'A Mile with Jesus'.  The booklet is packed with practical ideas, prayers to start you off and scriptures to encourage anyone prayer-walking.  They are available from Life Bookshop for £2.  Please note their amended opening hours this coming week.

During 2019 local churches are coming together to witness on the streets of the town as part of The Turning. We see this initiative as a good opportunity to warm up the spiritual atmosphere with prayer, praise and proclamation. Resources on prayer-walking will be available on the Love Weston website.

Let us know what you are doing as part of the prayer-walking in the week before Prayer on the Hill 2018 by completing the form here

Churches Together Emergency Night Shelter

Churches in Weston-super-Mare have come together at short notice to provide a temporary but very necessary solution for people living on the town's streets in the extremely cold weather conditions by opening an ad-hoc night shelter.

Barry Edwards from the Friends Meeting House (Quakers), in High Street, Weston-super-Mare said: 'It all came together very quickly. Last night was our first night. Ten homeless people responded to our offer of hospitality and somewhere safe and warm to sleep. They were all grateful for the welcome and especially the cooked breakfast.'

'We are grateful to Hands Of Change and Weston Homeless who donated food, blankets and hot water bottles,' said Barry.

The shelter was opened on Tuesday 27th February 2018 at short notice in association with Churches Together in Weston-super-Mare and District and will run from 8pm to 8am during the period of sub-zero night-time temperatures. It can accommodate up to 12 people.

Gary Hoare, President of Churches Together said: 'It's amazing what can happen in just 12 hours! Barry and I met Tuesday morning and hatched a plan... and by 7pm the doors of the Friends Meeting House were open to receive our guests. We are ultimately doing this to prevent people from needlessly suffering and potentially dying on our town's streets. I am really pleased how this has come together and grateful for the willingness of local people to respond to a potentially critical situation at the drop of a hat. We extend special thanks to the Friends Meeting House for hosting us.'

'This also illustrates the real need for a more permanent night shelter in the town. We are in discussion with various agencies and local concerned people with that in mind as well as Weston Town Council. The longer-term solution will likely need a more substantial budget and a professional manager along with a team of volunteers to make it happen,' said Gary.

The Friends Meeting House is on the corner of High Street and Oxford Street in Weston's town centre. North Somerset Council have notified their Street Wardens, the Street Pastors and emergency services about the temporary shelter.

Anyone wishing to support this or forthcoming Churches Together projects practically can contact Barry Edwards and Gary Hoare on 01934 624091. Donations to Churches Together Weston-super-Mare and District can be dropped in at Life Bookshop, 13 The Centre. PRAYER FLASH MOBilisation for Weston General Hospital

The LOVE WESTON team have been encouraging local Christians to pray and care for their streets since 2006.  During that time, many people have signed up to pray for families and businesses situated in roads surrounding where they live, where they work or where they sense there is need.  There have been numerous positive outcomes of this project which is ongoing.

Many of us are already aware about the needs of Weston General Hospital.  The headlines in today's news highlight the desperate shortage of beds nationally.  The list of challenges that hospitals are tackling is long - reduced funding, specialist and nursing staff shortages, the high cost of temporary / bank staff, ageing population, Australian flu and norovirus to name a few.  The impacts on patients in Weston have become obvious - night-time closure of A and E, appointments re-scheduled, specialty treatment / operations re-located to other hospitals in Bristol / Taunton.  We understand that this has also had a major impact on the workload and morale of the WGH staff and the ambulance service.

LOVE WESTON sense that this is a critical situation, and that it would be apt to create an opportunity for concerned local Christians to come together - without a specific mandate or solution - to hear about and then PRAY into the issues and challenges affecting the services that our local hospital provides.

The spirit of the gathering will be very much about bringing positive and constructive prayer for the various aspects of this complex situation.

This is NOT a political / lobbying rally or a public debate.  Others are consulting, lobbying, running petitions and making political viewpoints.  That is not what this meeting is about.

We believe that 'Prayer Changes Things!' If you care about Weston General Hospital - join us and be part of these informed prayers for positive outcomes for the benefit of all at the hospital and our community.

The format for the evening will be that invited guest speakers will briefly present key facts, information and opinions - we will then take time to listen to God as we pray into the situation in small groups.  We will meet cafe style, around coffee tables.  There will be times of praise and worship, led by Salv and Noelle Lomanto and friends. Refreshments will be served from 7pm. Entry is Free - we will take up a Collection towards costs.

Join us on Wednesday 10th January 2018, 7.30pm at Emmanuel Church, Oxford Street, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1TN.

We are encouraged to hear that some church and cell / home group leaders are considering re-convening their existing meetings and joining us for the evening where possible.

There will also be a short presentation on LOVE WESTON and the opportunity to sign up to pray and care for a street in the Weston-super-Mare area.

PLEASE HELP! - In view of the urgency, we are planning this a week ahead of the meeting date - and need your help to promote the Prayer Flash Mob.  We don't have much of a budget - so it's over to you to help us get the message out.  Please forward, share, like, tag, phone, announce at church / home groups, shout!! - to inform other concerned Christians about the evening.

PODCAST - Rebekah Brettles Visit

Rebekah Brettle - Neighbourhood Prayer Network

The LOVE WESTON campaign was inspired and encouraged by a visit from Rebekah Brettle, the Executive Director of Neighbourhood Prayer Network on 20th May 2015.

During the morning presentation, church leaders heard about how the initiative was launched at the 2012 National Day of Prayer & Worship at Wembley Stadium and how their churches can get involved.  Each Weston area church leader was presented with a personal copy of Rebekah's book - Neighbours transform your Street, a handbook full of practical suggestions to help mobilise prayer and care in our neighbourhoods.  (further copies available from LIFE.)

During the evening rally, after a time of lively worship, Rebekah shared a number of real life stories about answered prayers and lives transformed through practical expressions of Christian love and compassion.
